White House Ruins
by Mark Silversmith, Navajo
An archaeological site, the
"White House Ruins" is
where the ancient Anasazi
lived in Canyon de Chelly,
Arizona. They lived in
pueblos about 2000 years
ago and suddenly vanished
in 1250.

There are 80 rooms in the
ruins and 4 kivas , which are
rooms used for religious
rituals.

The name "White House
Ruins" was given because
white plaster was used on
the walls in the upper
sections.

The modern Navajo peoples
migrated into this region not
long after.
